EARLY YEARS
Ages 2–5

Where curiosity leads the way

In our Early Years program, children learn through play, exploration, and wonder - building the confidence, curiosity, and creativity that carry them through everything that follows.

Learning through play and inquiry

Our Early Years program follows the IB framework from day one. Children aged 2–5 learn through a careful balance of free play - child-led exploration that builds independence and imagination - and guided play, where teachers use purposeful activities to develop specific skills inside our units of inquiry.

Through themes like Who we are, How the world works, and Sharing the planet, children investigate big ideas through sensory, hands-on experiences. English is the language of the classroom; Spanish is woven in naturally. At this age, language is absorbed — not taught.

In the Classroom

Play-based learning

Play is not a break from learning - it is learning. Structured and free play develop problem-solving, creativity, and social confidence through doing.

Language immersion

All learning happens in English, with Spanish integrated naturally. At this age, children absorb languages without effort - fluency follows curiosity.

Social & emotional growth

Children learn to share, listen, and express themselves in a safe, consistent environment - building the emotional foundations that underpin everything else.

Creative expression

Art, music, movement, and storytelling are central - not extras. Creativity is how young children make meaning.

Outdoor exploration

Our Berango campus gives children space to run, climb, dig, and discover - through our school garden, nature walks, and outdoor play.

Individual attention

Small class sizes and a dedicated Teaching Assistant in every classroom means every child is known deeply.

"At this age, children don't distinguish between playing and learning. Everything is discovery. Our job is to make sure that discovery is rich, purposeful, and joyful."

A Typical Day

Every age and every year has its own rhythm - this is one example of how a day might unfold.

8:15

Arrival & welcome

Children are welcomed at the front of the school by teachers and assistants - whether arriving by car or by bus. A calm, familiar start to the day.

8:30

Morning circle

Songs, greetings in English, calendar, weather - and a preview of the day. "What are we going to discover today?"

9:00

Free play

Nursery and Preschool dive into child-led exploration: art, construction, sensory play, reading, and role-play areas. Teachers observe and extend learning naturally. Pre-K and Kindergarten begin moving between Units of Inquiry and specialist lessons - Music, Library, and Physical Education.

10:00

Snack & outdoor time

Healthy snack followed by outdoor play on our Berango campus - running, climbing, exploring nature.

10:45

Unit of inquiry

Guided play connected to the current inquiry theme. This week: "How do plants grow?" Children plant seeds, observe, and draw what they see.

11:30

Literacy & numeracy

Emerging reading, writing, and number skills through stories, songs, and hands-on activities - always playful, never pressured.

12:15

Lunch

A social time for eating together, practicing table manners, and chatting with friends and teachers. Followed by outdoor play to recharge in the fresh air.

13:00

Rest & quiet time

Younger children nap to recharge. Older children - no longer needing a sleep - enjoy quiet activities like puzzles, drawing, or listening to stories.

13:45

Creative expression

Art, music, movement, or drama - children explore and express themselves through different media, sometimes in the classroom, sometimes in the Little Gym.

14:30

Outdoor play & Spanish

More outdoor time, with natural Spanish language exposure woven into games and activities.

15:00

Stories, songs & reflection

Gathering together to share discoveries and celebrate the day's learning.

15:30

End of day

Children are collected by their families. A chance for a quick word with the teacher about the day.

Beyond the Classroom

Early Years children learn through their senses: gardening, water play, sand, cooking, and nature walks on our Berango campus. These experiences build curiosity and physical confidence alongside classroom learning.

Every Student Supported

Every child has a primary teacher who knows them deeply - their pace, their passions, their moments of struggle. Small class sizes and a dedicated Teaching Assistant in every classroom mean nothing goes unnoticed. Teachers communicate daily with families about progress, wellbeing, and the small moments that matter.

Celebration of Learning

Each term, children share what they've been investigating with their families - through exhibitions, performances, and classroom displays. For many parents, it's the first time they see their child talking confidently in English.
